I don't know about anyone else but I have attempted to grow an Avocado from the Pip a garzillion times. There was one stage when every Avocado Pip was attempted to be grown - and we eat a LOT of Avocados.
Attempted being the operative word here. I have no problem getting a Root to grow - though it takes weeks and weeeeeeks, and even once or twice I have managed to get a decent bit of Stalk as well - but alack and alas that is ever as far as they get.

Nope, not obsessed at all! It's so awesome watching thinsg grow and then actually getting FOOD from them! The idea is entirely exciting
Wow! I am impressed! I was never able to get past the roots! Although I don't even know what I would do with it if it did grow. It would never survive here anyway.

I've never even attempted to sprout an avocado. Or anything else. I just saw a book called Don't Throw It, Grow It! with tips on sprouting various "kitchen scraps" and I kind of wanted to try it...
I grew up in Southern California--aka Avocado central--and I would advise you to bring her in if it gets very cold there. She'll handle some cold weather, but I think frost is a problem. Also, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure you need more than one tree for them to fruit. She is very cute, though, and I'm totally impressed.
Wow, Audry III is a beaut! When I was a kid, my mom was trying to grow one here in Oregon, and it got pretty tall, maybe 3 feet or so, but never any bigger and no avocados :( We had that thing for years!
I don't know about bringing her in, but I'm sending happy growing vibes her way!

i wonder if i could grow one inside....the plant probably wouldn't be too happy about that though. bummer. i like your idea of outside during the day and inside at night to keep the frost off, but i couldn't do that in colorado during the winter.

OK, I my avocado tree is in its 7th flipping year of growth and we got ZIP...NADA...ZERO...ZILCH! I am guessing by now that you are getting my meaning.
The odd thing is, is that I did not even like avocados until about 5 years ago or so. So now I am stoked to have this tree bear its fruit. And when it does...beware. I can taste then now. Avocado sandwiches, guacamole and bread, the list will be endless.

I have 2 really skaggy looking avacado trees growing in my bathroom. They are still in the water and have been for 2+ years now. I have to plant them in dirt at some point because at most they have about 3 healthy leaves each.

Congrats! But I have to agree w/ Thedalyn, I think you need a male and female avo tree for them to fruit!
My Dad planted two pips when we were kids and they grew as one forked tree, we had so many avos, it was heaven. And then it was someone's stupid idea to cut.it.down. Worst idea ever, I've told them to let the stump grow again in the hope that eventually it will produce fruit.
So Audry needs a friend huh!

I like living in cold climates, but the thought of growing my own avocados makes living in a warmer state seem ALMOST tempting.

I feel the same way about my banana tree, I am so worried about a cold snap. The other day I saw a squirrel feasting on it and I ran out there. I hope it keeps growing for you!
Yay for Audrey! I like growing things from pips as well, but have never had much luck with avocados. Mangoes are very easy to grow, and so are guavas (not that either has any chance of fruiting in this country!)

One of my husband's friends has a huge avocado tree in his backyard with lots of fruit. We hit it up all the time. I love avocados!!!

Gorgeous plant! They *do* take for-ev-er to sprout but I hope you're not expecting fruit from her. Well, you may get lucky in about 4 years, but they typically don't provide fruit unless they are around other avocado trees. Sometimes, you have to graft a new avocado plant onto an existing fruit-bearing tree to get any fruit.
If you want to grow your own avocados, it's easiest to purchase a mature tree that's already fruit-bearing. We've got one in our backyard and we love it. We get tons of avocados every year, but we also live in the avocado capital of the world (San Diego, CA), so the weather is perfect for it.
