Made by my wonderful mum. Doesn't it look fab. And it tastes fab too. I cut off big chunks and dunked in my Stew.
Perfect for a chilly October in deepest darkest Yorkshire. This Stew had dumplings in. I believe Americans call dumplings biscuits (am I right?). This makes me laugh because biscuits are what you have with a cuppa tea (cookies)
I love the little differences in the languages. What do Ozzies and Canadians call these - biscuits or dumplings?

Yum! Is there anything better than fresh bread?!?!? And I love stew too! (Although mostly we call stews casseroles). And Aussies have biscuits as well....although I tend to call them cookies on my blog because I have a lot of US readers (and I've gotten in a bad habit of calling them cookies when I bake them myself, if they're store bought I still call them bikkies).
as far as I'm aware dumplings are dumplings in America. Biscuits for Americans are like a lighter non-sweet version of a scone. They're lovely and I make them all the time as they're so simple and go really well with all kinds of meals.
The differences are quite funny at times, zucchini, eggplant, rutabega (can't spell that!). Makes it interesting to try and cook stuff from US recipes if you're not up on the lingo!
Thanks for the York bits by the way, I usually go before Christmas and was thinking I needed a different place to eat lunch as the last one wasn't all that great!
In Australia we call them dumplings. Biscuits are sweet here, though I too tend to call a lot of things cookies. Partly because that is what the recipes always refer to them as and partly because I think cookie is a cute word!
When you drop savory dough on top of stew we call that dumplings in America. If savory dough is baked in the oven we call it a biscuit. Sweet baked dough we call cookies.
It is very odd that we all speak "English" yet have very different meanings and/or words for similar items.

Oh lovely! A good pot of stew and some fresh bread for dunking sounds really good right about now...even though it is still in the upper 90s outside...and it is nearly 5 o'clock in the evening! But the cold weather is coming and I will be prepared with a pot of yumminess!
your stew makes me think it's definitely crockpot season now. time for some rich and hearty stews to get me through the chilly days.

Don't get me started on what people call dumplings in the US. I grew up with a regional (Southern Delaware) "chicken and dumplings" that isn't like what other people call dumplings.

oh my goodness - that's one rock'n loaf of bread your momma made, Jeni - it looks amazing and sounds so yummy with your dumplin' stew! mmmmmmm! i'm with you on the dumplings 'n biscuit thing - i call dumplings just that when they're cooked into the soup - and biscuits are what i smother in gravy or have alongside a soup or something. :)
About the dumplings vs. biscuits: what Vegan Epicurean said. My hostess last summer looked all over for 'portabello' mushrooms until we realized they are just 'breakfast' mushrooms!
There's nothing better than fresh bread with a nice hearty stew. Looks great! I believe it's called dumplings when it's in a stew like that and biscuits when it's baked. Although for me, whenever I read dumplings I think of the Asian kind with the filling inside. :-)
I call them both! My husband actually got mad at me for calling them biscuits when I was making stew and dumplings 'cause he thought I lied about dinner. Sigh.

To a Canadian, a dumpling is what a Brit calls a dumpling; but a cookie is a biscuit; and a biscuit is like a scone, I guess.
That bread looks delicious! Here in the U.S. it's a dumpling if it's in soup and a biscuit if you bake it. Your biscuit is a cookie to us!
